Biography
Theo Van Doesburg was born on August 30, 1883 in Utrecht, Netherlands. Theo Van Doesburg was adopted in early life. In his childhood he didn’t go to school. He learned his style from Wasilly Kandinsky when he read his book Ruckblicke which is a biography of himself as a painter from 1903 – 1913. Theo Van Doesburg was considered the "ambassador" of the De stijl movement of art. From 1914 to 1916 van Doesburg served in the Dutch army, after which time he settled in Leiden and began his collaboration with the architects J. J. P. Oud and Jan Wils.
Theo's pen name was I.K. Bonsit. He had a stepfather that he didn't really like. His real father was named Theodorus Doesburg so he added "Van" onto his name.
He originally started in theater in 1900. At first he wanted to be an actor but than he turned to painting. Theo Van Doesburg never gave up, he was always on track. From as early as 1912 Theo published articles. He practiced
fauvist art work, an early 20th century form that started in France. He used bright, pure colors straight from the tube.
In 1915 he met Piet Mondrian and switched to Mondrian-style art. Theo van Doesburg founded the De Stijl movement in 1917 and devoted his career to spreading the groups ideas. Then in 1920s he traveled across Europe encouraging his beliefs, and settling only for a short time from 1922 to 1924 to teach at the Bauhaus in Germany. He stayed active in art groups such as Cercle et Carré, Art Concret and Abstraction-Création, which he founded in 1931. He was considered the ambassador' of the de styl movement. In 1931, on March 7 he died from a heart attack.
Style
He began painting under the influence of post Impressionism. After meeting painter Piet Mondrian, his panting changed styles to geometric abstraction. Theo used expressionism, impressionism and cubism with geometric figures, shapes, and architecture. He also used the de Still as his art movement. Theo liked to use primary colors when he painted. He spread ideas in Europe of artistic beliefs in his later years. In 1915, he met Mondrian and switched his approach to that of total abstraction. He switched from his horizontal and vertical line compositions in 1924. Theo even designed houses.
