Biography

Faith Ringgold is a simple ,yet beautiful and original artist. She uses quilt art, paintings, realism (black sympathy), cubism, and kid’s picture books to express herself. She was born in New York City, N.Y. on October 8, 1930. She grew up in New York’s Harlem and wanted to be an artist in high school.  She was inspired to always chase her dreams. She has been expressing herself through art since she was little. Ringgold went to the City College of New York where she studied fabric and majored in art.

In the 1950's, she studied art education at the New York City College. Her teachers were two important literal painters.She started out as an overly public artist. She taught at New York City public schools until 1973. Then she taught at the University of San Diego.  It inspirited her to start making her own paintings. By the mid-1970's she was making masks, heads of women she had known. The school had inspired her to become an artist forever.

She was especially inspired by reading James Baldwin and Amiri Baraka, who wrote about their lives as black men in a white American culture.

In 1967 and 1970 she was part of art shows at Spectrum Gallery in New York where she was the first African-American artist featured at the gallery. She received many awards: the Guggenheim Foundation Award in 1987; the Moore College of Fine Art's Honorary Doctorate in 1986.

 

Works

Her book Tar Beach was published in 1991. She wrote and illustrated the book.  Then the next year, she published the book Aunt Harriet's Underground Railroad in the Sky. One of her later paintings Dancing at the Louvre was of children playing under the incredible art work. Another was called tar beach,a painted story quilt and award winning children's book by Faith Ringgold. She has been doing art for 50 years.
