Biography

Piet Mondrian was born in Amersfoort, in 1872.  Piet was wealthy, and took painting lessons from his uncle.    Mondrian completed his education at the National Academy of Fine Arts. Piet Mondrian's dad was fond of art. Piet was Dutch.  His full name is Pieter Cornelius Mondrian.  His dad was also the headmaster of his school. Piet Modrian`s career began as a teacher at Primary Education, but while teaching he also practiced painting. Most of his work from this period is naturalistic and consisting of largely land. He studied art at the Amsterdam Academy and passed through a naturalist period.

After finishing his education, Piet moved to Paris, where he decided to become a cubist. He was stuck in Paris for World War I.    Hitler put his work on the “degenerate list”, and art critics disliked his work. This made it hard for him to keep going.    In 1910 he went to Paris, where the influences of cubism encouraged the development.

Piet Mondrian was the leading artist. He published a paper called Neo-Plasticism in 1920. Another member of this group was the painter Theo Van Doesberg who started the journal "De Stijl" in 1917. Other important people included George Vantongerloo of Belgium and architects Jacobus Oud and Gerrit Rietveld.  The work of this group of artists influenced the teachings at the Bauhaus in Germany and what is called the International Style.    He left his home in the Netherlands for Paris in 1912, returned to the Netherlands in 1914 to care for his sick father. 1940 he moved to New York.  He died Feb. 1, 1944

His early paintings showed his interest in impressionism and cubism.  Cubism is when a painter breaks apart a picture into meaningful pieces and rearranges them to show the most important parts.

Piet Modrian was known well for his abstract style. His artistic style was de Stijl (the style) and Neo-Plasticism. De Stijl was an art movement that used abstract and simple geometric shapes.  This form of art used rectangles and simple primary colors with black and white. This style was also called neoplasticsm.  Artists who painted this way looked for truth in the simplest form.

Works

His early work includes “The Sea”. Piet Mondrian made a famous painting called "Composition with Red Yellow and Blue."
