Tania Leon was born on may 14, 1943 in Cuba. Her grandmother noticed she was drawn to the radio seeking classical music. So her grandmother brought 4 year old Tania to a local conservatory, and insisted that the teachers instruct her.
She is both a teacher and an advisor to arts organization. She was educated at New York University. Tania Leon composed many music for ballets. One of early orchestra music is called Concerto Criollo (1980). Tania Leon also composes for operas and ballets. One of her early operas is called the Chamber Opera. She continues to make fabulous works.
Her opera Scourge of Hyacinths, staged and designed by Robert Wilson with Leon conducting, has received over 22 performances in Germany, Switzerland, France and Mexico. Based on a radio play by Nobel prize winner Woe Soyinka, it won the BMW prize as best new opera.
