Biography

Joseph Haydn was born in Austria in a village called Rohrau near the border of  Hungary in 1733. His father was Mathias Haydn, a city leader and wheelwright. One of the schools Joseph Haydn went to was Hainburg. He wanted to become a composer when he was eight, when he learned how to play the violin.

His father Mathias was a folk musician who taught himself to play the harp. Neither of his parents could read music, but his family was very musical and often sang together along with neighbors. His parents noticed Joseph's talent and tried to help him.  He never had serious music theory training, but studied by himself.

Joseph Hayden had many difficulties in his life. In 1749 He was no longer able to sing the high choral notes in some of the songs he sang.  Because he had no money (he made money by singing) he was sent to the streets to live with no food and no home.  After that his brother Michael, who was also a singer, got all of Joseph’s attention, and Joseph got even less famous than he already was.  Plus, a song he wrote called The Limping Devil was a very successful song.  It was later closed down by the censors, which are the government.

Joeseph Haydn composed over 100 symphonies (6 “Paris” Symphonies, 1785-1786; 12 London symphonies. Most concerts for violin, cello, harpsichord and trumpet. He wrote chamber music and sacred vocal music. Haydn He was a close friend of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and a teacher of Ludwig van Beethoven.

Joseph hadyn was one of the most important composers of the classical period.  Haydn spent much of his career as a court musician for the wealthy Hungarian aristocratic Esterhazy family on their remote estate.  At the time of his death, he was one of the most celebrated composers in the classical period.

Being one of the most famous composers in the Classical music period, he is often called the "Father of the Symphony".
