Biography
Christo was born on June 13, 1935 in Bulgaria as Christo Javacheff. It was the same day and year his wife Jeanne-Claude was born. His mother really wanted him to have private drawing lessons. When he went to art school he loved to draw and paint.
Christo studied at the Fine Arts Academy in Sofia Bulgaria from 1953 to 1956. In 1957 he went to the Vienna Fine Arts Academy for one semester. After that in October, 1958 he went to Paris where he met jeanne-Claude. On May 11, 1960 they had their first baby and it was a boy; they named him Cyril. Cyril later becomes a poet after graduating from Columbia University in 1982. Five of his books have been published. In 1964, Christo moves to New York City where he continues to live.

Style
Christo is an environmental artist. His work is one of a kind and sometimes controversial; that is, some people dislike it because it is big. He creates very large works like wrapping islands in fabric. His goal in art is to simply create works of art, joy and beauty for the world. He wants people to see the world in a different way.

Umbrellas, California and Japan, 1984-1991
Works
His early works are "Project for the Wrapping of a Public Building", Stacked Oil Barrels" in Paris France, and "Dockside Packages at Cologne Harbor with Tarpaulin and Rope". The last project took two weeks to create. In 1962 he built an iron curtain wall made of oil barrels as a project.

Running Fence, California, 1972-1976
In the 1970's he created the "Running Fence". This was an immense fabric fence in California. His later works include the umbrella project. He up up hundreds of yellow umbrellas in California and blue ones in Japan from 1984-1991. his umbrella project was a success! In 1992, he did a big project on the Arkansas River.
