Stagecoaches were often crowded. How many people
are on this ride?
Black Bart was a legendary stagecoach robber. When he stopped stagecoaches
with a shotgun in his hand, he wore a white flour sack on his head with
holes cut out for his eyes. On top of that he wore a black hat! This interesting
bandit left poetry , boasting of his cleverness, in the empty boxes after
he took all of the money.
Here I lay me down to sleep
To wait the coming morrow-
Perhaps success, perhaps defeat
And everlasting sorrow.
Let come what will, I'll try it on,
My condition can't be worse;
And if there's money in that box,
'Tis money in my purse.
After 27 holdups they caught him! During a robbery, he dropped a handkerchief
with an identifiable laundry mark on it. The police traced the handkerchief
back to Charles E. Boles. He freely admitted his crimes and spent four
years in San Quentin prison. Crime does not pay.
