mining People from many countries came to get rich in the Gold Rush. In 1851, when California became one of the United States, the Foreign Miner's Tax Law was passed. This law forced non-citizens to pay taxes for the right to mine gold.

Some foreign miners were mistreated and falsely accused of crimes; they had no political rights. Many foreign miners were forced to leave the gold fields.
