B. Yes! Chinese, Chilean, and Mexican miners were considered "foreigners." Some of these miners had mined gold or other precious metals in their home countries, so they were very successful miners. They were often envied and mistreated by the white settlers.

Chinese immigrants called California "Gam Saan," the Golden Mountain. When they arrived in California, they faced prejudice in many forms. "No Asians Allowed" signs were posted in some mining areas.

They were allowed to rework abandoned mines, and often found lots of gold. Some Chinese businessmen were attacked and ridiculed just because they were from a different culture. Their stores were ransacked and destroyed.
