During the gold rush, it was often more expensive to have your underwear washed than to buy new ones. So, people frequently just threw their dirty clothes away instead of having them washed!

Do you think they really sent laundry to China or Hawaii?

Some history books say this was just a joke of the times. On the other hand, some history books say it really happened. Hubert Howe Bancroft is a well respected historian. In his History of California, published in 1888, Bancroft notes, "Much linen was sent to Canton and the Hawaiian Islands to be washed." How could we find out if this was really true?

We do know for a fact that it was expensive to have clothes washed. 49ers came to California to find gold, not do laundry! Who did the laundry anyway?
