A. It may seem weird, but they did ship ice to California! A ship from Boston brought 147 tons of ice to California in July 1850, and it was quickly sold for 80 cents a pound.

How did they keep the ice from melting on such a long trip without refrigeration? They packed the ice in tons of sawdust. That's incredible!
