A. Yes! The shippers would pay them extra money and/or give them prizes
to encourage them to get to California as soon as possible. The ship owners
wanted their cargo to get to California quickly so they could profit from
selling their products before the rush was over. Many captains were offered
hefty bonuses and/or money. For example, Lady Wilma's captain was
promised a clipper ship if he won the race. The captains also raced for
the pride. Most captains set out to break some other ship's record.
