C. Right! The Maidu Indians called their home "Koloma," which
means "beautiful valley." On January 24, 1848, James Marshall
and his crew were building a sawmill on the American River in this valley.
His crew included whites and Native Americans. As they worked, they noticed
gold nuggets down in the river bed. This discovery sparked the Gold Rush.
Today, the town is called "Coloma."
The mill's saw was powered by the water from the American river flowing
through a large wooden wheel.
