A. Hangtown was the second gold camp that sprang up during the
Gold Rush. "Old Dry Diggings" was its original name because
the river level fell so low in 1848 that the miners had to haul their
gold ore hundreds of yards to wash it.
The town's name was changed to Hangtown because of all the lynchings
that took place at "Hangman's Tree." In 1854, the town was officially
renamed Placerville. Why do you think they named it "Placerville?"
